Definitions

Agoraphobia; Extreme or irrational fear of crowded spaces or enclosed public places
Schizophrenia; A long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours
Depression; A condition of mental disturbance involving a lack of energy and difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life
Anorexia Nervosa; A psychological disorder characterized by somatic delusions that you are too fat despite being emaciated

Deviation from Social Norms; Social norms are the unwritten rules that members of a society regard as being normal and acceptable. If a person is to deviate from these “rules” they are considered abnormal. For example; people are to go out wearing clothes and not appearing naked in public, saying “please” and “thank you” if someone has held a door open for you, etc.
Failure to Function; A person is considered abnormal if they are unable to cope with the demands of everyday life.  They may be unable to perform the behaviours necessary for day-to-day living e.g. self-care, get changed, interact with others etc. This is failing to function.
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health; This is defined as what is normal/ideal and anything that deviates from this is regarded as abnormal.  This requires us to decide on the characteristics we consider necessary to mental health.  Psychologists vary, but usual characteristics include; having a positive view of self, capability for growth and development, positive friendships and relationships etc.

Self-Attitudes; having a high self-esteem and a strong sense of identity
Personal Growth; the extent to which an individual can grow and develop, becoming self-actualised affects their mental health
Integration; how someone will cope in a stressful situation
